I will second that the on-demand leaves much to be desired and their prices for premium cable stations (HBO, Showtime, etc.) are terrible as they don't "haggle" down the prices like the major competitors in other towns. They also don't offer the portable capability for these stations - in almost every other town in Massachusetts, if you subscribe to HBO, you can also get much of the on demand on your smartphone/tablet - called HBO GO, and that added service is FREE to subscribers. Also, they need to staff someone on weekends to add services. I sent them a very polite letter asking for some of these services to be considered and never heard back. THAT BEING SAID, those are needles in a haystack of me being impressed with their rates on everything else, and I am thankful to have them. You know they offer a good service when you approach even a salesman for DISH and they aren't eager to talk to you. View Comment
Hopefully we see a nice post soon from the author of this letter praising SELCO for dropping everyone's electric rates by 4% starting next month. It's easy to attack SELCO for something that seems cruel on one level, but with their low rates, seniors couldn't move anywhere else and get cable cheaper - even at the new rates, so I continue to applaud SELCO for doing what is needed to stay below the "big guy" companies. The author has talked extensively about responsible taxes, so I thought he would be pleased to see that SELCO is generating the funds they need to remain viable in the realm of a recreational expenditure (television) as opposed to electricity. Question: Firefighters are the first responders in any emergency. For non-fire emergencies, why does a fire truck have to be dispatched? It seems like such a waste of funds to take such a large vehicle out when nothing proprietary about a fire truck will be used to handle the emergency. I am not an educated firefighter, so maybe there is a good reason, but I've always wondered why a car couldn't be used (like a specialized fire car similar to a police car) instead. This isn't a sarcastic "I think I know everything so I will vomit my snarky stance online" question - I'd really like to know if someone else does. Thanks! View Comment
So glad SELCO is adding a wireless device option. I was upset they didn't have HBO Go so I stopped subscribing to the regular channel. I think they should have to notify people when the rates for their channels go up (HBO went up and I was never notified until I saw the bill). I would like to encourage them to offer more specials for their cable network channels. And it would be great if they staffed someone on weekends! View Comment
I spoke to my doctor of over twenty years about both medical related ballot questions to get his opinion. On this one, he was adamantly against it passing. There are alternatives in pill form that would have the same effect for medical use, so ultimately this ballot question would be legalizing the smoking form. Bottom line is this will put more drugs on the street - I cannot in good conscious support that. View Comment
I don't understand why TDV hasn't deleted that heinous comment from rdot. This was a tragic incident that should not be joked about in any way. That being said, NOT seeing the movie if you wanted to would just be letting the sadist impact one more person from enjoying what is a great movie. I saw it yesterday, and am going to go again. People really shouldn't miss it because of the horrible actions of one. View Comment
I think this picture of the Governor should be removed from the story. It's a very disrespectful capture. TDV is above that type of image. I voted for Healy and Baker, but still believe we should respect those in elected office. View Comment
Shrewsdsbury - Anyone is allowed into the town meetings, and anyone can comment or argue an article, it's just the elected that can vote. Go on Wednesday if you would like and publicly comment on the remaining articles - you won't be turned away. It's not a closed meeting at all. And if you wanted to put the time and effort into it, you could also run and get elected to town meeting as a voting member. There were precincts this year that didn't even have enough people who wanted to run for the position. If you care so much (which is admirable if true) you should try and run. So often I see internet critics who think they know best and are quick to criticize, yet haven't done the same amount of work/research/examination of the facts that the voting body has. View Comment
Best of luck to Kane!
Kane's service to both the senior citizens and families in this community is exceptional, and he is able to communicate his ideas effectively. Kane isn't just a 'yes' or a 'no' candidate, he is a 'let's look at the issue as it fits into the big picture' candidate - which is something rare in all politics. He has earned a second term, and should be rewarded as such. I may not agree with everything he stands for, but the difference with Kane and his competitor is that even when I do disagree, I feel like Kane respects those with opposing views and actually tries to work through the differences instead of just shut them down. I will proudly be voting for Kane, both in this poll and on election day, and I encourage all Shrewsbury residents to do the same. View Comment
I would like to congratulate Jim Kane on an exceptional debate performance. Kane was the only candidate for selectman who illustrated a clear vision for Shrewsbury, specific solutions to solve issues, and a respectful demeanor. If you missed the debate, it will be rebroadcast on local cable, and it's truly not to be missed. It was a fascinating discussion. View Comment
Here is a direct quote he made to another reporter: "I believe my reelection will insure three more years without a Prop 2-1/2 Operational Override.” Yet, to Lindsay Corcoran, this reporter, (above) 'He said he wished the Board would have considered an override rather than raise the sewer fees last year, which would allow residents to take a tax break.' He can't have it both ways.
I RESPECTFULLY disagree with this man's flip/flopping, say-what-you-need-to-get-elected mentality. It's dangerous for the town, in my humble opinion. View Comment
