HOLDEN, Mass. — It was a tough end to a tough year for the Shrewsbury High girls basketball team, which lost its MIAA Central Mass. Div. I quarterfinal game Friday at Wachusett, 44-33.

Third seed Wachusett Mountaineers entered the postseason with an impressive 16-4 record. The Shrewsbury Colonials, who had struggled to earn a playoff spot, were sixth seed with a record of 11-9.

The Colonials kept it close until after the first half, when they appeared outmatched by Wachusett's tough, relentless defense. About two minutes into the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers offense found its footing, increasing their lead by about 10 points and keeping the pressure up until the final buzzer.

Scoring Summary

Shrewsbury      9   7   6    11 - 33

Wachusett        8  11   7   18 - 44
