SHREWSBURY, Mass. - Shrewsbury resident Victoria Benoit, a junior at Roger Williams University, was named to the All New England second soccer team Dec. 4.
Benoit had previously been named to the Commonwealth Coast Conference first team. She played in and started all 22 contests for the Hawks this season.
Benoit anchored the Hawks defensive unit and led the Roger Williams women’s soccer team to its third consecutive Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship and third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance.
However; the NCAA draw did not favor the Hawks this year as they were paired with Messiah College, the five time and current defending national champions. Benoit and her teammates brought their ''A" game to Grantham and while Messiah was the victor, Roger Wiliams ended Messiah’s streak of 17 shutouts, and was the only team to score on the eventual repeat national champions during the entire tournament.
The Hawks lost only one senior and will return their entire starting line-up next year. Benoit and her teammates look to earn the CCC Championship for a fourth time, sweeping the award each season of their collegiate careers.
Meanwhile, Benoit will complete her final exams and head to Australia where she will study the influence of sports on Australian culture and take in five sporting events: surfing, netball, cricket, football, and zip lining, while visiting Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra.
