WORCESTER, Mass. — Shrewsbury High's varsity field hockey team's dream ended unceremoniously Saturday. Shrewsbury lost its bid for the MIAA state championship, 3-0, to Acton-Boxborough Regional High School.
The game was a stalemate through much of the first half, with Acton-Boxborough's offense in control most of the time. Shrewsbury managed to hold its own until an Acton-Boxborough one-two punch in the final minutes of the first half. With 5:11 left, Colleen Fowler broke the scoreless tie. Then, with 2:59 left, Eleni Neyland scored with an assist from Eleana Cardarelli.
Acton-Boxborough was unrelenting in the second half and managed one more goal with 7:57 left. With Shrewsbury down a player for a penalty, Neyland scored again, with help from Cardarelli.
Shrewsbury, the district central champion, entered the game with a 19-3 record. Acton-Boxborough's record heading in was 21-1-1.
