SHREWSBURY, Mass. — The Colonials dominated possession of the ball as Shrewsbury defeated Quabbin, 1-0, in field hockey on a cold Monday afternoon.

The blue and gold will advance to the semifinals in the MIAA district tournament.

With barely a minute left in the first half, Shrewsbury’s junior captain Alanna Maniatis scored with an assist from senior captain Meg McKinley. The ball hardly left Quabbin territory in the scoreless second half.

Shrewsbury head coach Lauren Chenevert credited her team with knowing where to put the ball at the right time to nullify the Quabbin offense.

“Quabbin is always an incredibly talented team, and it always seems to be the two of us at district time,” said Chenevert.

Maniatis, McKinley, and junior Justine Sheehan were standout players Monday. Chenevert said. “It just came down to who’s going to put the ball in the net,” she said.

Shrewsbury will face either Burncoat or Westborough on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Foley Stadium in Worcester.
