MILLBURY, Mass. —There are some great football games on the slate in Central Massachusetts this weekend. Millbury takes on Northbridge with playoff hopes on the line and both teams needing a victory.
Millbury is tied for third place with Nipmuc in Division 4, but fifth place Southbridge is nipping at their heels. Northbridge is in first place but they are being closely pursued by No. 2 Grafton. Check with your local Daily Voice reporters for updated scores and recaps.
Friday, Nov. 9
Millbury at Northbridge: 7 p.m. Northbridge (7-2) is led by Quarterback Matt Phelan who can run, pass and has lots of weapons on offense. After losing to Auburn last week 39-7, the Rams will look to enter the playoffs on a roll with Millbury and Uxbridge on Thanksgiving.
Millbury (5-4) beat Southbridge 28-25 in a thriller with Nick Blaisdell using a hurry-up offense with running backs Ross Sudar and Randy Mogren. This week they’ll try to slow things down and keep the powerful Rams offense on the bench.
Grafton at Littleton: 7 p.m. Grafton (6-3) blew out Tantasqua 35-21 last week, chalking up 418 yards on the ground. Cody Munoz led the way with 176 yards and three touchdowns.
Littleton (7-2) beat West Boylston 18-14 last week.
Westborough at Auburn: 7 p.m. Auburn (9-0) has been unstoppable all year. Last week they blew out a powerful Northbridge team 39-7 and forced five turnovers on defense.
Westborough (1-8) has struggled all year and last week was blanked 6-0 by Marlborough. The Rangers will have their hands full this week and will need a big effort to stay with the Rockets.
Algonquin at Shrewsbury: 7 p.m. Shrewsbury (7-2) beat Leominster 33-32 last week on a final drive where they converted three fourth downs to score the game-winner on an 8-yard pass from Mike Coggeshall to Ryan Dube.
Algonquin (2-7) beat North Middlesex 25-13 last week, playing their best game since opening weekend.
Wachusett at North Middlesex: 7 p.m. The Mountaineers (6-3) blew out Milford 26-6 last week with Scott Tupper scoring twice (7- and 9-yard runs) and a John Lucier 42-yard touchdown reception.
North Middlesex (3-6) lost to Algonquin, 25-13, last week.
St. John's at Milford: 7 p.m. St. John’s (5-4) Pioneers snapped a four-game losing streak as quarterback Drew Smiley accounted for five touchdowns, three rushing and two passing.
Milford (2-7) was blown out by Wachusett 26-6 last week.
Oxford at Leicester: 7 p.m. Leicester (7-2) blasted Uxbridge 34-13 last week as Nick Kenneway returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. The Wolverines put it away early, scoring 27 points in the first quarter, and went on cruise control the rest of the way.
Oxford (1-8) was blown out 30-7 last week by Shepherd Hill.
