SHREWSBURY, Mass. — Hundreds of students at the first-ever Mr. Shrewsbury High School contest, hosted by the school's National Latin Honor Society, were treated to a show of comedy and music Friday night.
The evening offered a range of entertainment from the contestants — some were serious but most were comic. The acts included an opera, a dance, a Ninja Turtle tribute and a rendition of George Michael's "Careless Whisper" sax solo.
"They worked so hard, and it really showed," Latin teacher Heather Thompson said. "I couldn't have hoped for better."
In the end, it may have been Greg Rybacki'ssinging that earned him the title of Mr. Shrewsbury High School.
Although the benefit show offered an evening of laughter, the money raised went to benefit a serious organization, said Adam Proch, president of the Latin Honor Society.
It served as a fundraiser for the society and as a service project for Andy's Attic, a local charity named for Andy Reese, a Shrewsbury High School student killed in a 2010 car accident, Proch said. The organization provides disadvantaged high schoolers in Shrewsbury and surrounding with new and gently used clothing.
