SHREWSBURY, Mass. — Perhaps the most memorable Shrewsbury story of 2012 is one of the most gruesome, shocking and ultimately tragic.

On April 5, Shrewsbury police charged Jieming Liu, 79, with murder. Liu was discovered by his son with blood on his hands and face at Shrewsbury Green, police said. The body of Liu's wife, Yuee Zhou, 73, was found dead in a rear bedroom, her left arm stripped of flesh and the fingers torn off, police said.

During Liu's arraignment, it was revealed that he likely killed his wife and ate her flesh, prosecutors said.

Liu, who reportedly had Alzheimer's disease, died in May at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Jamaica Plain. He had been transferred from Bridgewater State Hospital, where he was being psychiatrically evaluated after his arraignment.
