Grafton Woman Dies In Shrewsbury Accident

SHREWSBURY, Mass. — Shrewsbury Police have reported that a two-car collision resulted in a fatalities Saturday night at the intersection of Route 20 and Grafton Street.

Elaine Barber, 60, of North Grafton, was pronounced dead at UMass University Hospital as a result of her injuries in the collision.

Police said that around 8:30 p.m., a 2004 Audi A-4 driven by Steven Cabral, 25, of Hudson, was traveling East on Route 20 when it collided with a 2007 Honda Civic, driven by Barber, traveling north on Grafton Street.

Shrewsbury Police and Fire units, as well as  UMass paramedics, were at the scene, and both operators were transported UMass University Campus Hospital. Cabral was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

As a result of the accident and investigation, Route 20 traffic was detoured for approximately three hours. The accident remains under investigation by Central Mass. Law Enforcement Council crash reconstruction, and by Shrewsbury Officers Ryan Chartrand and Daniel Cronin.

This is the second fatality in as many weeks to occur on Route 20. On Nov. 29, Timothy J. Sullivan, 48, of Shrewsbury, was killed when he attempted to cross Route 20 when he was struck by a Jeep. That incident also remains under investigation.
