SHREWSBURY, Mass. —  A suspect is being held for a mental health evaluation after striking a Shrewsbury Police Officer with a vehicle and running from police.

According to a statement by Shrewsbury Police, officers were working a traffic detail on Route 9 near White City Plaza when they saw a vehicle operating erratically. Officer Lawrence Napolitano approached the vehicle, but police said the operator was not cooperative and drove off from the scene, striking Napolitano in the process. The officer was not injured, but the suspect eluded police after heading east on Route 9.

Shrewsbury Police saw the suspect's vehicle about an hour later on Carlton and Main streets. After the suspect again fled, police deployed Stop Sticks tire deflation devices, bringing the vehicle to a halt.

The suspect, who was uncooperative at the scene, was transported to UMass Emergency Mental Health for evaluation. Police said they are not releasing further information, including the suspect's name, pending further investigation.
