SHREWSBURY, Mass. – Raymond Joseph Grimaldo Sr. of Shrewsbury died Jan. 13 at his home, surrounded by family. He was 85.
He was born July 31 1927 in Worcester to Francesco and Anna Marie Fazio Annunziato Grimaldo. His parents died at a young age and he was then supported by his siblings and other family members.
Grimaldo became a shoe shiner at Union Station in Worcester as a young boy. He was honored at the reopening of the station in 2000. As a teenager, he became an electrician’s apprentice and then started Better Electric Co. Inc. in Worcester at the age of 21.
The company still operates at its original location on Grafton Street 65 years later. Besides spending time at his summer home in Dennis, Mass., and working at his store, he most enjoyed being with his wife and family.
Grimaldo served as a Reserve Deputy Sherriff for many years, was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish and was recently recognized for being the longest sponsor of Jack Barry Little League.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Angelina DeMango Grimaldo; two sons, Raymond (Andreana) Grimaldo Jr., of Shrewsbury, and Joseph (Ruane) Grimaldo, of Marlborough, Mass.; two daughters, Anna (David) Rosi, of Northborough, Mass., and Angela (Dr. Aristides) Exarchos, of Shrewsbury; a brother, William (Rita) Grimaldo; a sister, Carol Sclamo; and 11 grandchildren.
Grimaldo was predeceased by a sister, Loretta Roy; two brothers, Albert Grimaldi and Joseph Grimaldi; and two nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel St. Ann Church of Worcester. Burial will follow at St John’s Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mercadante Funeral Home in Worcester.
