SHREWSBURY, Mass. – Glen B. Umphrey of Shrewsbury died Jan. 6 at his home, with family by his side. He was 93.

He was born Dec. 3, 1919, in Washburn, Maine, to Fred Forrest and Annie Fox Umphrey. Raised and educated in Washburn, he work at Pratt-Whitney Corp. and Norton Co. before joining the Navy during World War II.

Umphrey then worked as an engineer at Eastern Climate Control Corp. He also took courses through the Armed Forces Institute and Worcester Junior College. He married Jane R. Shenkowski on Aug. 31, 1957, at St. Paul's Cathedral in Worcester.

In 1963, Umphrey and his partner, the late Arthur "Bill" Gustafson, established Thermo Engineering Inc. He transferred ownership to his son Mark after his retirement in 2000.

Umphrey loved playing tennis and enjoyed rounds of the game with friends at Worcester Tennis Club, Holden Towers Tennis Club and the Greendale Y in winters.

He also had a passion for photography and had homes on Cape Cod and in West Harwich, Mass. He was a member of Worcester Rotary Club, Greendale Men's Club and Friends of Shrewsbury.

He also belonged to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, the Massachusetts chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers and First Baptist Church in Worcester.

Umphrey was predeceased by his son Mark S. Umphrey; a son-in-law, Craig L. Eckerman; and three siblings, Arthur, Wilmot and Neil Umphrey.

He is survived by his wife; three children, Kim M. Eckerman of Sheridan, Wyo., James G. (Maureen) Umphrey of Northborough and Joy C. (Philip) Borrello of Tyngsboro; a daughter-in-law, Denise Umphrey of Lowell, Mass.; three siblings, the Rev. Robert "Dale" (Mary) Umphrey of Anchorage, Alaska, June Pohl of Sun City Center, Fla., and Lois (Merle) Nickerson of Dade City, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Ann Umphrey of Millbury; and 11 grandchildren.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Heald & Chiampa Funeral Directors Sumner House in Shrewsbury. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Worcester, with the Rev. Thomas R. McKibbens officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
