Francis J. Sweeney

SHREWSBURY, Mass. – Francis J. Sweeney of Shrewsbury died Saturday, Jan. 26, at Shrewsbury Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after an illness. He was 86.

He was born Oct. 22, 1926, in Worcester to Michael J. and Helen Hamilton Sweeney. He graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester and served in the Navy during World War II. He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1950.

He worked as a systems analyst for more than 30 years at MITRE Corporation before retiring. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing and jogging.

Sweeney was predeceased by his wife, Rita M. Reardon Sweeney, in 2008; and a daughter, Kathleen, in 1994. He is survived by a son, Michael; four daughters, Maureen, Patricia, Eileen and Sharon; two brothers, Leonard and Robert Sweeney; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at a later date at Church of St. Mary in Shrewsbury. Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
