SHREWSBURY, Mass. — Here is a summary – in no particular order – of the Top 10 Shrewsbury stories of 2012:

Shrewsbury Man Accused Of Killing, Eating Wife. On April 5, Shrewsbury police charged Jieming Liu, 79, with murder. During Liu's arraignment, it was revealed that he likely killed his wife and ate her flesh. Liu, who reportedly had Alzheimer's disease, died in May at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Jamaica Plain.

Mosquito Fears Create A Buzz In Shrewsbury. In September, Shrewsbury called off or rescheduled all evening and nighttime school and municipal programs, a move repeated in towns across Central Mass.

Hurricane Sweeps In, Winter Strangely Absent. Hurricane Sandy swept in Oct. 29, blowing down trees and knocking out power all around Central Mass., although Shrewsbury seemed to be spared the worst.

Town Meeting Says Yes To Raises, Budget. Town Meeting representatives in May cut the school department's proposed budget while raising salaries for some employees.

Shrewsbury Voters Make The Calls. During the 2012 elections, Shrewsbury voters supported President Obama, U.S. Sen. Scott Brown (who lost statewide to Elizabeth Warren), U.S. Rep. James McGovern, State. Sen. Michael Moore, State Rep. Matthew Beaton, incumbent Selectman Jim Kane, incumbent school committee member Steve Levine and first-time candidate Jason Palitsch.

New Sherwood School, Student iPads. Construction of the new Sherwood Middle School was completed, and every Sherwood student was given access to iPads.

Work Begins On Shrewsbury's New Burns Bridge. In 2012, ground was broken for the new, $90 million bridge that will be completed in 2015. The bridge will replace the current structure that has connected Shrewsbury to Worcester since 1916.

Shrewsbury Remembers Coach Leo Murray. Shrewsbury High School athletics lost one of its own when golf coach Leo Murray died. The school's past golf season was dedicated to Murray's memory.

Teen Dies In Fall At Ski Ward In Shrewsbury. Tragedy struck the Ski Ward Ski Area in January 2012 when Nipmuc student John Street died after falling from a ski lift.

Shrewsbury Man Charged With Threatening Assumption College. Kevin Forts of Shrewsbury was charged with making threats of violence at Assumption College while he was a student in 2011.
