SHREWSBURY, Mass. - A group of Shrewsbury police officers saved Christmas for one boy when they all chipped in to replace his biggest gift, a Kindle, that was stolen on Christmas Day.
Michael Laperle-Whalen, 13, of Blackstone, was visiting family in Shrewsbury when his Kindle went missing, according to Sgt. Michael Cappucci.
Cappucci said party-goers saw a man place the Kindle in his pants and leave with it. They tried to confront him, but were unable to retrieve the gift.
Danielle White, Michael's mother, was extremely upset since she could not afford to replace the gift.
When Officer Chad Chysna, working on the Christmas Day shift when the call came in, heard the story from Officer Nick Perna, who responded to the call, he decided to buy the boy a new one.
"Chad's got a heart of gold," Cappucci said. "He was going to pay for it himself, but all of the guys heard about it and wanted to chip in."
Each of the officers working on the shift chipped in $10 to $20 to raise the $100 to buy a new Kindle.
Officers surprised Michael on Monday night with the replacement Kindle.
"I was crying when the officer told me this morning," White said. "It just shows you there are good people out there."
The Shrewsbury Police Department has issued a warrant for the man for larceny from a building and larceny under $250. The man already has several warrants, according to police.
