SHREWSBURY, Mass. – In preparation for the Town Election next week, TheDailyShrewsbury.com will be profiling candidates this week – including the two for the contested race for Board of Selectmen, but also the candidates for School Committee and Town Moderator.

Jason Palitsch, who describes himself as a product of Shrewsbury Public Schools, is looking to bring his unique perspective as a fairly recent graduate to the School Committee.

Although Palitsch is running unopposed in the May 1 Annual Town Election, as current School Committee member Steve Levine will not be running for re-election, he said he wants to make sure the people of Shrewsbury know who he is.

Palitsch graduated in 2007 from Shrewsbury High School and headed to Northeastern University to get his degree in political science. He has been a Town Meeting Member for three years and also worked as an aide for state Sen. Michael Moore.

"Having gone through the system and having the perspective of a recent graduate can be helpful," Palitsch said.

He also noted that his work in Sen. Moore's office has given him first-hand knowledge of how the budget process works at the state level.

"I had an insight into the state and local financial relationship, which is especially relevant when it comes to education funding," Palitsch said.

As the School Department continues to face budget challenges, Palitsch said he wanted to be part of the decision-making process to come.

"I want to be part of the discussion of priorities in the coming years," Palitsch said. He noted that this is the first year families will really begin to feel the impacts of the budget challenges – in the form of increased classes and the loss of an administrator at the younger grade levels.

Palitsch said he really wanted to run to help maintain the quality of the school system that provided him with so much.

"My family moved to Shrewsbury when I was 2 because of the school system," Palitsch said. "I think many families move here and stay here for that reason."
