SHREWSBURY, Mass. – The long-awaited Five Guys Burgers & Fries opening finally arrived on Monday, with customers filling the new restaurant to try their specialty for the first time or get a fresh taste at the new location.

"A lot of customers were excited to see us open up," said Director of Operations Rich Lanza. "We even had a few people waiting for us to open the doors at 11."

Lanza said the restaurant was busy on the first day, with employees dressed in their red shirts prepared to fill orders.

"We have gotten a lot of new customers and some regulars who were ready for us to open in this new location," Lanza said.

Many customers were trying the Bacon Cheeseburger "All the Way," with all of the free toppings, the Cajun seasoned fries and the 107 flavors of soda.

"This is the best burger I've ever had," said Tom Scott, one of the designers for the White City renovations who said he has been eagerly awaiting the opening.

Dick Mitchell, Jack Kievit and Dick Greene were all enjoying the free peanuts before getting their meal following their morning ice hockey practice.

"We usually go to Panera three times a week after skating, but we decided to try here today," said Jack Kievit, a first time Five Guys customer. "You certainly can't be a health nut here."

Five Guys is now open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The restaurant includes a store front facing Rte. 9 in the White City plaza, with a patio for outdoor dining that will be opened in the spring.

They hired about 50 employees before the opening, with plans to trim the staff once the operation becomes more efficient.

Lanza said so far the whole operation has been working smoothly.
