The students, members of the schools Helping Hands Club, included juniors Sarah Swanson, Brianna Flanagan, Nikki Beauregard, Erin Sior and Sarah Kwon and freshman Daniel Swanson. They were joined by 35 members of the Shrewsbury Plunging Pirate team in the Polar Plunge event at Nantasket Beach in Hull.

Helping Hands raised $2,000 for the Special Olympics, according to Swanson, while the Pirates raised more than $15,600.

The Special Olympics of Massachusetts said the Polar Plunge is the organization's largest single-day fundraiser. A second Plunge was held at Revere Beach. Since 1999, the Plunge has raised $2.9 million.
