SHREWSBURY, Mass. — There's a lot of ways to express one's love for filmmaking.
Some collect DVDs or movie memorabilia. Then there's Shrewsbury resident Natasha Colonero, who Monday and Tuesday, let the crew of the short film "Residual" use her Stoney Hill Road house as a set.
"It's a little hectic, so I let my neighbors know. They're used to this sort of thing," Colonero said while sitting in her kitchen among a boom mic, lighting rigs and a couple of cameras.
Colonero herself won't be in "Residual," but both her sons will be. Colonero said appearing in films as extras has become a family affair. She was an extra in Larry David's upcoming TV movie "Clear History" and her husband, Craig, can be seen in 2011's "What's Your Number?"
Their son, Dante, 10, could be seen in the recent Seth McFarlane comedy "Ted" and in "Labor Day," while other son, Gianni, 8, has appeared as an extra in "The Makeover" and performed this year in "The Nutcracker" at Worcester's Hanover Theater.
To help network with other parents of aspiring local child actors, Colonero formed her own Facebook group. It was through another online network Colonero connected with director Christopher Grace, who needed a location for his new supernatural thriller. Colonero sent Grace photos of her house and Grace liked what he saw.
That networking has become important both for independent film makers and for actors, according to "Residual" star Erica Derrickson, of Boston.
"It's a really vibrant community," said Derrickson between takes at Colonero's home. "We have an opportunity to help each other in a really meaningful way. It's almost like a grassroots film movement. It's very empowering."
Grace said that having people like Colonero volunteer their home to serve as locations for independent films is "immensely important."
"It's great to bring local film to Shrewsbury," Colonero said.
Grace said he plans to enter the film in festivals once the short is completed. There also will be screenings of the supernatural thriller in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, in addition to online venues. For more information, visit Facebook.com/ResidualtheFilm.
