A Short Sprinkle

Lawns don't like super-hot weather any more than you do. Here are some tips on helping your lawn survive the heat.

• Lawns only need one inch of water per week. If it's really hot, water more frequently.

• One long, deep watering with a sprinkler is better than several short spritzes with a hose. Long watering encourages deep root growth, which keeps the grass healthy. But don't overwater.

• To check if you've watered long enough, put an empty tuna or cat food can on the lawn under the sprinkler. When the can is full, turn off the sprinkler.

• Water early in the morning or after sundown. This will reduce evaporation of the water you've just applied to your lawn.

• Don't water when it's windy. You'll find yourself watering everything but the lawn.

• Set your lawn mower to its highest setting during the summer. Longer grass prevents evaporation of precious water.
