Keep Your Kids Busy in Fairfield This Weekend

It's nice to have the kids home for the holidays, but what to do for the week after the initial Christmas rush? Here are some suggestions for what to do (besides head to the mall for after-Christmas sales) in and around Fairfield over the weekend.

First, it's important to know what's closed. All town offices will be closed from Friday until Monday morning. All three libraries (the main branch, Fairfield Woods Branch and Pequot) are closed Friday through Monday as well. The Community Theatre will not have show times Friday or Saturday. And the Fairfield Museum and History Center is closed Christmas Day.

Through the end of the weekend, the Community Theater offers a nice break for parents, with showings of "The Social Network" and "The Town" Sunday through Tuesday. And Sunday at 1 p.m., families can keep the Christmas spirit going with a screening of the Will Ferrell comedy "Elf."

The Fairfield Museum and History Center brings Christmas cheer as well, with its Holiday Train Show continuing through Jan. 2. If you have kids ages 4 to 6, bring them to "Pre-K Train Time" Monday at 11 a.m., a special event with train stories and songs.

Just over in Bridgeport, the Discovery Museum will be closed Monday, Dec. 27, to walk-in visitors, but is open the rest of the weekend, including Christmas Day. If your kids forced you to stay up late for this week's eclipse, take them to the three daily shows in the museum's planetarium and its new exhibit, "Giant Worlds."

If your kids prefer learning about animals, Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo is open its regular hours every day except Christmas. Don't forget to check out the new vampire bats in the Rainforest Room!

Once the full week off rolls around, SportsPlex on Mill Plain Road has something to keep the kids occupied all week. Every day from 9 a.m. to noon, the complex will host its Winter Break Sports Camp. Four of SportsPlex's venues — the Fairfield Ice Academy, the Gymnastics and Cheerleading Academy, Carabiner's Indoor Rock Climbing and the new Field House — will offer instruction and equipment to kids in the program.

Parents can sign their children up for just one day (for $60 per day) or the full week for $250. Registration is required in advance, by calling 203-254-8399 or e-mailing info@fairfieldiceacademy.com.

Check back early next week for another rundown of vacation week activities.
