Pace Women Win, Men Lose to Assumption

Pleasantville’s Pace Setters women’s basketball team clinched the No. 3 seed in the Northeast-10 Conference with a win against Assumption College on Saturday.

Pace earned a 70-55 win and improved its record to 19-6 overall and 16-5 in conference. Brittany Shields led the Setters with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Setters jumped out to a 14-0 lead after five minutes and opened up a 30-6 lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half. Assumption pulled within eight at 33-25 with a minute to go in the half and Pace took a 35-25 lead into the break.

The Greyhounds got within four at 37-33 early in the second half, but Pace held them off for the rest of the game. The Setters made 11 of 12 free throws in the final four minutes to put the game away.

Carol Johnson had 16 points, six rebounds and two assists for the Setters. She now has 251 assists in her career and became the 22nd player in Pace history to dish 250 assists.

Kerri White added 10 points and five rebounds for Pace, while Allison Cleary had 11 points and three assists.

Pace will finish its regular season with a game at Le Moyne College on Monday at 5:30 p.m. and will host the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament on Sunday.

The men’s team lost a close game to Assumption, 67-62. The Setters are now 13-12 overall, 11-10 in conference and sit in a three-way tie for sixth place in the conference standings.

Pace built a 13-9 lead in the first six minutes but Assumption tied the game at 14 with 11:54 to play. The Greyhounds took their first lead at the 9:35 mark and widened the gap to 11 with 1:24 remaining in the first half. Pace managed to cut the lead to 32-25 at halftime.

Pace trailed by eight at one point in the second half but managed to stay within four for the better part of the half. Keon Williams’ layup with 1:24 remaining brought Pace within one at 62-61, but Assumption then hit a three-pointer. Denzel Primus-Devonish hit a free throw with 18 seconds left to make it 65-62, but Assumption hits two free throws with 17 seconds left to put the game out of reach.

Williams had 18 points and eight rebounds for Pace, while Jon Merceus had 17 points and four boards. Primus-Devonish had 13 points and Kai Smith led the team with three assists. Justin Alston had eight points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists.

The Setters will travel to Le Moyne College for the last game of the regular season on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
