EASTON, Conn. Although everyone is affected by the blackout after a historic and rare October snowstorm, the elderly population is acutely feeling the pain.
We have 750 households that we are in regular contact with, said Senior Center Director Valarie Buckley. It is absolutely freezing in these people's homes, and many of them do not know where to go."
One of the many places that has been made available to Easton residents is the senior center. We have cots, blankets, hot water, food, hot coffee, and were a warm place, Buckley said.
Since Sunday, Buckley said people have been venturing in and out of the senior center. Most are coming in looking for a hot cup of coffee. Its funny, but people want that familiarity of home. Buckley and her husband, Town Clerk Derek Buckley, stayed at the senior center Sunday night to make sure Easton residents were doing well.
Its important to us that everyone is OK and taken care of, Buckley said.
Four other residents slept at the center Sunday night. It was just too cold in their homes, Buckley said.
John and Priscilla Chatfield of Adams Road stayed at the center. John will be 91 next month, and I couldnt have him staying in a freezing, cold house, Priscilla said.
Coming to the center has been just a wonderful experience for us. Given the weather, I couldnt take a chance with John. Here, we are warm, we are safe and the cots are quite comfortable. It couldn't be better, Priscilla said.
