NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. The road to Girl Scouts highest honor for area girls Laura Zoe Gerkis and Alexandra Karounos led to refurbished spaces serving children and adults at Sound Shore Medical Center.
Gerkis revamped the pediatric clinic waiting room, a choice dictated, she said, by her desire to benefit children. She paid for the project by getting donations from family and friends, and through fundraising by her scout troop. She also won a grant from The Childrens Dream Foundation, an area nonprofit that helps hospitals provide the best pediatric facilities.
My greatest reward is knowing that my one act of kindness brought many smiles to peoples faces, said Karounos.
Karounos project involved painting walls and providing new cabinetry, window treatments and supplies for the art room in the Ludington Adult Day Services Center. She paid for her project with contributions from family, friends and local businesses.
Community outreach is at the core of Sound Shores mission, the medical center said in a news release. Thats why it was particularly appropriate to assist the teenagers in meeting their final requirements for Girl Scouts highest recognition The Gold Award. The girls projects were chosen with an eye toward achieving measurable and sustainable results for a community issue about which they cared, the release said.
