IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- After a difficult loss in its season-opener, Irvington found itself at a crossroads. Would the Bulldogs rebound with a strong week of practice in preparation for its game with John F. Kennedy of Somers or would they allow the loss to Briarcliff bring them down?
Irvington answered the question with a resounding win as senior fullback Kevin Degnan ran for a career-best 233 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-13 win over Kennedy. Degnan had scoring runs of 55, 1 and 5 yards.
It was tough to come back from that loss. Everyone gave it 150 percent and we just focused on looking forward, said Degan, who ran for 105 yards against Briarcliff. We had two of the hardest practices weve ever had since Ive been here.
Degnan opened the scoring with his 55-yard rumble.
This is an example of what Kevin is capable of when he goes all out the entire game, Irvington coach Mike Oliva said of Degnan. We brought Kevin into the office and challenged him to give his best at all times and he responded with a great performance on both sides of the ball.
Even with his outstanding performance, Degnan deferred to his offensive line.
I give all of the credit to the offensive line, Degnan said. They just dominated on every single play. They were executing and the holes were enormous. I could not have done anything without the offensive lines work.
Irvington was pleased to give Oliva his first varsity win.
The enthusiasm and dedication that he and all of the coaches have brought is great, Degnan said. I have never had a coach who is as dedicated as coach Oliva. He has brought the program up and back to where it should be.
