NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Melissa Plotkin was one of many city residents Sunday evening who attended a memorial service and brick unveiling at Amy's Greenhouse at Barnard School to remember those who perished in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks one decade ago.

Plotkin, a parent and former co-president of the parent teacher association at Barnard School, attended the ceremony, which also was held in honor of Amy O’Doherty—the daughter of Barnard pre-kindergarten teacher Geraldine Davie. O’Doherty was one of 123 Westchester residents, out of 3,000 people, who lost their lives on 9/11.

“It’s a big milestone," said Plotkin. “We're happy to see her honored. It’s part of coming full-circle for us.”

After initially receiving flowers and gifts, Davie said she wanted something more permanent and constructive for her daughter’s memory. She decided to ask for donations for the creation of a greenhouse in her daughter’s name.

“Amy’s spirit is alive and well at Amy’s Greenhouse,” said Davie. “She was a little ray of sunshine gone too soon.”

Millie Radonjic, greenhouse manager, invited members of the Kiwanis International Clubs from the Bronx and Southern Westchester to the ceremony—New Rochelle school personnel, fire and police departments, and other city officials were also in attendance.

“It’s very important for everyone to come together to support each other in difficult times,” said Sue Plath, of the club’s Hartsdale chapter.
