Meet the Leader of Westport's Young Woman's League

WESTPORT, Conn. – The name Kristin LaFleur is one many Westporters are likely familiar with. The newly elected president of the Westport Young Woman's League was a Republican candidate for second selectman in 2009 along with Gavin Anderson.

A member of the Westport Rotary Club, LaFleur served on the Board of Education for four years before running for office. She currently serves on the executive board of the Coleytown Middle School PTA. But 17 years ago, when she and her husband planted roots in town, she wasn't as well-known as she is now—which is why she joined the Young Woman's League.

"I was looking to get more involved with the community," said the 43-year-old mother of two. "We had lived in New York for a while and I missed not knowing as many people."

LaFleur joined the nonprofit philanthropic organization of women in 1998. Since then, she said she's made many close friends, both in and outside the organization.

Getting to know people isn't the only benefit LaFleur has received by being a part of the organization. In fact, what she enjoys most about the league is the work she and the other members do for Westport and surrounding communities in Fairfield County.

Every year, the league awards grants to a variety of local charities. The money comes entirely from league fundraising projects. In addition to raising funds, members participate in a variety of volunteer projects, such as cooking meals for the homeless and collecting books, clothing, schools supplies and holiday gifts for needy children.

"I love how much we are able to help people by working together," LaFleur said. "There are a lot of people who need help, and it makes me feel good to be part of an organization that's dedicated to doing that."

The league is currently accepting applications for new members. Membership is open to all women 21 and older who live in Westport. For more information or to fill out an application, visit the league's website.
