SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. Philipsburg Manor will celebrate Labor Day weekend by highlighting the Hudson Valley's Native American heritage, Historic Hudson Valley recently announced.
The Green Corn Festival will take place on Sept. 3 through 5 and will feature storytelling, performing artists, games, demonstrations and crafts. The festival's name comes from traditional Native American tribes' harvest celebrations, which marked a time to enjoy a great feast, give thanks, sing chants, dance, and to name children born since the mid-winter festival, according to Historic Hudson Valley.
At Green Corn, we reach back to the time before Philipsburg Manor was born in the late 1600s to celebrate and help educate visitors about the areas original inhabitants, said Philipsburg Manor Site Director Thom Thacker. The compelling performers we have lined up make this a fun, lively, and thought provoking experience for all ages.
Kenneth Little Hawk will be among the performers at the Green Corn Festival. Little Hawk is a storyteller and musician. He uses his performances to share Native American culture and history.
The Red Hawk Dance Troupe will also be performing Labor Day Weekend. The troupe teaches Native American cultural traditions while encouraging audience participation.
Exhibits at the festival include a demonstration of Native American cooking, wampum-making and Native American crafts. The festival will take place from 10 a.m. To 5 p.m. Each day.
Tickets for the Green Corn Festival are available online at www.hudsonvalley.org. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $6 for children aged 5 to 17. Children under 5 and Historic Hudson Valley members get in free. Advance ticket buyers can use the promo code MAIZE to save $2 per ticket.
