D-Day Memories Today in Chappaqua

It will be 67 years ago Monday that the Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy in hopes of regaining Western Europe from German control. Two seniors playing Gin Rummy at the Chappaqua Community Center look back it fondly.

“I heard about it on the radio,” said Mel Wolfson, who was 15 on that fateful day in 1994, living in Brooklyn. “It was very exciting. There was a fella, his name was George Hicks, and he was right on the scene.”

Wolfson described feeling scared on D-Day because there were blackouts throughout the city. “I found out much later on that day, an older brother of a friend of mine was there,” Wolfson continued.

“I was a messenger in New York City during the air raids,” said Joe Burgstresser. “I don’t have much of a memory of D-Day because I was too young but I remember World War II.”
