Unbeaten Briarcliff Bears Host Edgemont

BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. – Buoyed by a new attitude and a strong group of senior leads, the Briarcliff Bears, winless last fall, are 2-0 in the new season and looking for more success when they host unbeaten League I-B rival Edgemont Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

“It was a good win,” halfback Colin Orr, said of the Putnam Valley Game. “We had some trouble finishing off some of our drives but we played hard. W. Edgemont’s a good team, who is also 2-0 with two impressive wins. It’s going to be a good game and we're going to need to play well.”

The Bears played tough defense last week and showed a strong passing game, scoring on a 17-yard pass from Ryan Hooper to Jon Marrero and an 18-yard option pass from Orr to Marrero for the winning score. Look for Hooper-to-Marrero again, but the Bears have to prove they can also run the ball and finish drives.

Briarcliff opened on the road with a 32-29 nail biter over Irvington and celebrated a successful home opener last week with another tight 12-8 victory over Putnam Valley. The Bears defense held Putnam Valley’s running game, which had rushed for 293 yards in its opening-day victory over Pleasantville, at bay.

Edgemont, which topped Nanuet 13-12 in its opener and defeated Ardsley 28-20 last week, brings an active offense led by quarterback Mike Rothstein and running back Jake Barnes. Ben Levy can catch passes and run the ball.
