SHREWSBURY, Mass. — Hitting the gym may not be the first thing you think of in the aftermath of a hurricane. But for residents in Shrewsbury, Northborough, Grafton, and Southborough, Shrewsbury Health And Racquet Club offered shelter and a hot shower.

SHARC representative Stephanie Muzzy said a few from Northborough families that were without power or hot water enjoyed a respite at the club after Hurricane Sandy struck on Monday. Power in Northborough wasn't expected to be restored until Friday.

Muzzy said that, in addition to its hot water, SHARC has a large basement that can act as a shelter for local residents in the event of an emergency.

SHARC's facilities are made available through arrangements with town administrator's and SHARC's management.

"Owner Darlene Yatim is strongly committed to the community," Muzzy said. "When the towns ask to utilize our facilities we always say yes."
